CAT 2026 Key Changes: Five New IIM Admissions Explained for the Candidates

CAT 2026 aspirants must prepare for significant IIM admission changes, including the introduction of JAP, revised CAP participation, and updated selection criteria at IIM Indore and other institutes.

For the 2026-28 MBA batch, aspirants must look beyond just their CAT percentile. Several Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have introduced or continued diverse admission criteria, making it essential for candidates to review each institute’s selection process carefully. Simply meeting the CAT cut‑off does not ensure a call for the next stage; understanding individual IIM policies is crucial for securing admission.

Several IIMs have introduced notable changes to their admission process. Four institutes have rolled out a Joint Admission Process (JAP), while the Common Admission Process (CAP) have undergone key changes. In addition, IIM Indore has implemented a revised selection process, and IIM Udaipur continues to follow its independent admission process.

Online MBA vs Regular MBA 2026: Which is Better for You?

August 7, 2026

CAT 2026 exam, organized by IIM Indore, will take place on November 29, 2026, in three sessions across nearly 170 cities. Registration is currently open and will continue till September 15, 2026. The exam pattern and syllabus remain the same, ensuring consistency for aspirants preparing for MBA admissions.

CAT 2026: Four IIMs Introduce Joint Admission Process (JAP)

IIM Kashipur, IIM Raipur, IIM Ranchi, and IIM Tiruchirappalli have collaborated to introduce a Joint Admission Process (JAP) for their two‑year MBA programmes. As part of this arrangement, eligible candidates will appear for a common Personal Interview (PI).

However, this joint step does not imply identical final selection criteria across the institutes. Each IIM will prepare its own merit list and apply its individual admission formula, ensuring that institute‑specific policies remain in place while considering candidates who participate in the shared interview.

CAT 2026: CAP No Longer Common Across IIMs

For CAP 2026, only IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Jammu, and IIM Sirmaur took part, while other IIMs conducted their own admission processes. For instance, IIM Udaipur follows an independent framework that includes CAT scores, a written test, and a Personal Interview (PI).

This shift means MBA aspirants cannot rely on a single common process for all IIMs. Candidates must check the official admission notifications of each institute to understand the specific criteria.

CAT 2026: IIM Indore Revises Admission Criteria

For the 2026–28 MBA batch, IIM Indore has revised its selection framework. The institute has increased the weightage for CAT performance, reduced the emphasis on Class 10 marks, and introduced work experience as a factor in the admission formula.

These changes highlight the importance of understanding each IIM’s selection criteria before applying. Two candidates with similar CAT percentiles may face different admission outcomes depending on their academic record, professional experience, and performance in later stages such as the Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI).

CAT 2026: High Percentile Alone is Not Enough

Meeting an IIM’s minimum CAT cut‑off does not automatically secure an interview call or final admission. Institutes evaluate candidates on multiple parameters such as sectional CAT scores, academic performance, work experience, written tests, and Personal Interviews (PI).

For example, IIM Ahmedabad considers CAT performance, academic records, the Analytical Writing Test (AWT), and the Personal Interview in its selection process.

Therefore, aspirants should not rely only on past CAT cut‑offs. Admission policies and weightages can change with each cycle, making it essential to review the latest IIM admission criteria before applying.

Key Points that CAT 2026 Aspirants Should Check

Preparing for IIM admissions requires more than just clearing the CAT cut-off. Each institute follows its own selection criteria, and aspirants must stay updated with the latest policies to improve their chances.

  • Check Latest IIM Admission Policies: Do not depend only on previous-year criteria; each cycle may bring changes.
  • Track CAT Selection & Overall Cutoff: Review both sectional and overall requirements for the IIMs you plan to target.
  • Review Academic Weightages: Understand how marks or scores from Class 10, Class 12, and graduation are considered during shortlisting.
  • Check Work Experience Criteria: Know whether professional experience adds value in the selection process.
  • Prepare for Later Stages: Be ready for written tests, Analytical Writing Tests, and Personal Interviews where applicable.
  • Understand JAP and CAP Separately: Participation in one process does not cover all IIMs; each institute may follow its own admission route.

FAQs – CAT 2026 Key Changes

Ques: What is the Joint Admission Process (JAP) in CAT 2026?

Ans: The Joint Admission Process (JAP) is a collaborative framework introduced by four IIMs — Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi, and Tiruchirappalli — for their two‑year MBA programmes. Under JAP, eligible candidates appear for a common Personal Interview, but each IIM prepares its own merit list and applies its individual admission formula.

Ques: What changes did IIM Indore make to its admission criteria?

Ans: For the 2026–28 batch, IIM Indore increased the weightage given to CAT performance, reduced the importance of Class 10 marks, and introduced work experience as part of its revised selection framework. This highlights the need for aspirants to understand each IIM’s selection formula before applying.

Ques: What is the difference between JAP and CAP?

Ans: The Joint Admission Process (JAP) involves a shared Personal Interview among four IIMs, but each institute applies its own final selection formula. The Common Admission Process (CAP), on the other hand, is a centralized interview process used by select IIMs. Participation in JAP or CAP does not automatically cover all IIMs, so candidates must track individual notifications.
