MAT Score vs Percentile 2026: Key Differences and Easy Calculation Formula

Wondering how MAT score and MAT percentile differ? Understanding both is important for MBA admissions, as most colleges shortlist candidates based on percentile rather than score. Check the MAT percentile calculation method, score normalization process, and the estimated MAT Score vs Percentile 2026 analysis here.

AIMA releases the MAT result in the form of both scores and percentiles. However, MBA colleges primarily consider the MAT percentile during the admission process. Therefore, candidates should understand how the MAT percentile is calculated. Unlike many other MBA entrance exams, the MAT percentile is derived from the scaled score rather than the raw score. The method used to calculate the MAT scaled score is also different. Knowing the relationship between the MAT score and percentile can help aspirants set realistic targets, plan their preparation effectively, and shortlist suitable MBA colleges based on their expected performance.

MAT Score vs Percentile 2026

The MAT exam is conducted in multiple sessions each year, allowing candidates to appear more than once. As a result, the MAT score and percentile calculation process differs from other MBA entrance exams. The MAT percentile is determined by comparing a candidate’s performance with other test-takers from the same session, with the highest scorer’s performance serving as the benchmark.

Earlier, the Economic and Business Environment section was excluded from MAT percentile calculation. Now, all five sections are considered. The total score out of 150 is converted into a scaled score ranging from 200 to 800, which is then used to calculate the MAT percentile. Read on to understand the MAT score vs percentile calculation process and its impact on MBA admissions.

What is MAT Score?

MAT Composite Score represents a candidate’s overall performance in the MAT exam. It is calculated using scores from all five sections and is reported on a scaled range of 200 to 800.

Key Points About MAT Composite Score:

  • The MAT Composite Score is reported on a scale of 200 to 800.
  • Scores below 200 and above 800 are rare.
  • Section-wise scores generally range between 20 and 80, with scores outside this range being uncommon.
  • Any score below 200 is reported as 199, while any score above 800 is reported as 801.
  • The composite score is calculated using the performance across all five sections of the MAT exam.
  • This scaled score is later used to determine the candidate’s MAT percentile.

This score helps candidates assess their performance and estimate their chances of admission to participating MBA colleges.

What is a Good Score in MAT?

A good MAT score depends on the percentile you aim to achieve and the MBA colleges you are targeting. Candidates with higher composite scores generally secure better percentiles and have access to a wider range of MBA institutes. The table below shows the expected score ranges and their corresponding performance levels:

MAT Composite Score MBA Percentile Performance Level
750+ 95+ Percentile Excellent
650-700 90+ Percentile Very Good
600-650 80-90 Percentile Good
Around 500 Below 70 Percentile Average

A score of 650 or above is generally considered competitive for admission to many reputed MAT-accepting MBA colleges, while a score of 750+ places candidates among the top performers.

MAT Score Normalization 2026

In the MAT normalization process, the score distribution of all candidates is treated as a common benchmark for each section. Scores obtained across different exam sessions are then adjusted against this benchmark to ensure fairness. The normalization formula takes into account the performance of the top α% of candidates in each session, based on the number of test-takers. This process helps minimize score variations caused by differences in difficulty levels across MAT sessions.

MAT Score Normalization Formula

The normalized score for a candidate is calculated using the following formula:

X̂ᵢⱼ₀ = (Xᵢⱼ − Gᵢ) * [ (M₀α − G₀) / (Mᵢα − Gᵢ) ] + G₀

Meaning of Variables:

  • Xᵢⱼ = scores of jth candidate in ith session
  • Mᵢ = mean raw score of ith session
  • Sᵢ = standard deviation of ith session
  • Mᵢα = mean score of top α% candidates
  • Gᵢ = Mᵢ + Sᵢ
  • M₀ and S₀ = mean & standard deviation of raw scores of overall sessions

This normalization process adjusts scores across different MAT sessions and ensures fair comparison among candidates, regardless of variations in exam difficulty levels.

What is MAT Percentile?

MAT percentile is different from the MAT score. It shows a candidate’s performance compared to other test-takers in the same session. A percentile indicates the percentage of candidates who scored lower than you. For example, if 5,000 candidates appeared for the MAT exam and you scored the 90th percentile, it means you performed better than 90% of the candidates and ranked among the top 10% of test-takers.

Since MBA colleges mainly consider percentile for admissions, understanding the MAT percentile is important.

How to Calculate MAT Percentile?

After the MAT composite score is calculated, AIMA determines the percentile based on a candidate’s performance relative to other test-takers.

MAT Percentile Formula

MAT Percentile = (No. of candidates who scored lower than Candidate A x 100) / Total No. of Candidates

A MAT percentile shows the percentage of candidates who scored below a particular candidate. For example, if a candidate secures the 90th percentile, it means they performed better than 90% of the test-takers in that MAT session.

While some MBA colleges use the MAT composite score for admissions, many institutions consider the MAT percentile during the shortlisting process. In addition, candidates may also have to clear selection rounds such as Group Discussion (GD), Personal Interview (PI), and Written Ability Test (WAT).

MAT Score vs Percentile 2026

The table below provides an estimated MAT 2026 score vs percentile comparison, helping candidates understand the expected percentile corresponding to different MAT scores:

MAT Composite Score Expected MAT Percentile
750 – 800 98 – 99 Percentile
700 – 750 95 Percentile
650 – 700 90 Percentile
550 – 600 80 Percentile
500 – 550 70 Percentile

Note: These are estimated score-to-percentile ranges and should be used only as a reference for exam preparation and college shortlisting.

Details Mentioned on MAT Result 2026 Scorecard

The MAT scorecard contains a candidate’s section-wise scores, percentiles, and overall performance details. The following information is mentioned in the MAT result:

  • Scores obtained in Language Comprehension, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis & Sufficiency, Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, and Economic & Business Environment
  • Scaled scores for all five sections
  • Sectional percentiles for each section
  • Overall MAT percentile and Composite Score

These details help candidates assess their performance and determine their eligibility for MBA admissions.

Difference Between MAT Score and MAT Percentile

MAT score reflects a candidate’s actual performance in the exam, while MAT percentile shows how that candidate performed compared to other test-takers.

For example, the MAT score is based on marks obtained across all sections, whereas the percentile indicates the percentage of candidates who scored lower than a particular candidate. Since MBA colleges primarily use the overall MAT percentile for shortlisting, it is often considered more important than the composite score during the admission process.

FAQs – MAT Score vs Percentile

Ques: Is MAT score more important than MAT percentile for MBA admissions?

Ans: No, most MBA colleges accepting MAT scores primarily consider the MAT percentile during the admission process. While the MAT score reflects a candidate’s performance in the exam, the percentile shows how that performance compares with other test-takers. A higher percentile generally improves the chances of getting shortlisted for MBA admissions.

Ques: Does a higher MAT score always guarantee a higher percentile?

Ans: Not necessarily. Since the MAT percentile calculation is based on relative performance, the same MAT score can result in different percentiles across sessions. Factors such as the difficulty level of the exam and the performance of other candidates influence the final percentile.

Ques: How much MAT score is required to get a 90 percentile?

Ans: A MAT composite score between 650 and 700 is generally expected to result in a 90th percentile or above. MAT score and percentile trends may differ from one session to another, as they are influenced by overall test-taker performance and score normalization.

Ques: Are all five MAT sections considered for percentile calculation?

Ans: Yes. The final MAT score and percentile are based on performance in Language Comprehension, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis & Sufficiency, Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, and Economic & Business Environment.

Ques: Why does AIMA use score normalization in MAT?

Ans: AIMA conducts the MAT exam in multiple sessions throughout the year. Since the difficulty level may vary slightly across sessions, a normalization process is used to ensure fairness. This method adjusts scores so that candidates from different sessions can be compared on a common scale.

Ques: Can two candidates have the same MAT score but different percentiles?

Ans: Yes. Two candidates with similar MAT scores may receive different percentiles if they appeared in different sessions. The percentile depends on a candidate’s ranking relative to other test-takers in that specific session, not just the score alone.
